Metals in Chemistry and Physics?

I am currently studying quantum mechanics and astrophysics, but i have a curiosity in what classifies an element as being a metal, and what is so special about metals. My interest comes from the quantum point in which an element is both metallic, and magnetic. Can someone please give me some basic interesting facts about metals and their properties. Thank you :)
